Biochar and ICOF Commercialization Initiative
Lead Researcher: Dr. Hezron Mogaka, Environmental Economist, University of Embu and Advisory Board Member CCCAM
The University of Embu, through Dr. Hezron Mogaka, is spearheading a critical project aimed at enhancing sustainable agriculture in Western Kenya. Supported by a French Government grant, the Biochar and ICOF Commercialization Initiative will focus on the promotion of biochar and insect-composted organic fertilizer (ICOF) in the counties of Busia, Kisumu, and Siaya.
Objectives:
- Sustainable Agriculture: Enhance soil fertility and improve crop yields through biochar and ICOF.
- Economic Empowerment: Create job opportunities along the biochar and ICOF value chains, with special focus on women and youth.
- Policy Development: Foster evidence-based policy formulation around biochar and ICOF to support agricultural productivity.
Key Activities:
- Supply chain development for biochar and ICOF in target regions.
- Job creation initiatives in collaboration with community stakeholders.
- Policy advocacy for sustainable farming and climate resilience.
Anticipated Outcomes:
- Increased agricultural productivity and improved food security.
- Enhanced environmental sustainability through carbon sequestration and soil conservation.
- Economic growth driven by local value chains in sustainable agriculture.
This project aligns with CCCAM’s mission of fostering climate resilience and sustainable development through innovative research and technology transfer. By addressing climate adaptation and mitigation, this initiative supports CCCAM’s broader goal of empowering vulnerable communities in Eastern Africa to withstand the impacts of climate change while enhancing livelihoods.
Project Partners: The project is implemented in collaboration with notable institutions such as the Kenya Agricultural and Livestock Research Organization (KALRO), International Centre of Insect Physiology and Ecology (ICIPE), and international partners like CIRAD and IRD.
