On June 5, 2024, The University of Embu hosted the national celebrations of the World Environment Day organized by the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA). The theme of the event was “Land restoration, desertification and drought resilience”. During these celebrations, the Centre led the participants in drawing the attention of the local community and general public to the importance of the event by staging a Caravan Walk through the main highway in Embu town leading to the University. The walk was organized by the Pan African Climate Justice Alliance (PACJA), and was graced by the then Cabinet Secretary for Environment, Climate Change and Forestry, Hon. Soipan Tuya, who was the chief guest for the Word Environment Day Celebrations, accompanied by the Governor of Embu County, H.E. Cecily Mbarire. Over 200 students drawn from seven public universities from Mt. Kenya region took part in this walk that was also meant to build momentum towards the Nairobi Summer School on Climate Justice (NSSCJ) that took place in Chuka University between 24th June and 7th July 2024. The students had also joined the Chief Guest and other dignitaries in planting trees around a degraded wetland in Kiambuthi suburb near Embu town in an effort to restore it. This wetland has since been adopted by the University for complete restoration.
